Are you looking forward to the camping season as much as we are?

If so, we’ve got some great tips to prepare your RV that can help you get ready and camp safely. This is a great time to do your annual RV spring maintenance and protect your investment. You can prolong the life of your RV by doing these simple routine maintenance items. If you don’t feel comfortable doing any of these items our service department would be glad to help you! Just give us a call to schedule an appointment.

Basic RV Spring Maintenance Checklist:

• Check batteries
• Flush the water system and refill with potable water
• Check for any water leaks
• Check tires and tire pressure
• Check appliances
• Check fluids in engine and generator and change as needed
• Inspect seams and seals
• Perform a full safety check

Batteries

Clean terminal connectors and check for corrosion. Check battery water level and be sure to use only distilled water.

Water System

Sanitize your RV water system and check for leaks. Add potable water to the fresh water holding tank, turn the water pump on and open all of the water faucets. When the water is running clear through the system turn the pump off and close the faucets. Take the water heater out of the by-pass mode (if applicable). If the water heater wasn’t bypassed before winterizing the unit, the antifreeze needs to be drained from the water heater tank. Replace any water filter cartridges you removed for storage.

Tires

Your RV tires can lose 2-3 psi a month while sitting in storage. Be sure to check for wear and tear on your tires. Adjust the inflation pressure to the manufacturer’s recommendation based on the load. Failing to maintain correct tire pressure, based on the load, can result in fast tread wear, uneven wear, poor handling, and excessive heat build-up which can lead to tire failure. Tire manufacturers publish load and inflation tables that should be followed for proper inflation pressure.

Appliances

Check the operation of all LP gas fired appliances. Make sure the water heater tank is full of water before testing the water heater. If an LP gas appliance is not operating properly, have it inspected by an authorized RV service facility. Insects are attracted to the odorant added to LP gas and they build nests that can affect the appliance from operating properly.
Note: The LP gas system should have a leak test and LP gas operating pressure test performed annually. These tests should be performed by an authorized RV repair facility.

Engine and generator

Check the transmission, power steering, engine coolant, engine oil, windshield washer and brake fluid. Consult your vehicle owner’s manual for proper levels. If a fluid level is low, try to determine why, and correct the problem. Service the engine and engine fluid levels according to specified intervals found in the vehicle owner’s manual. Start the engine and check for proper readings on all gauges. Check the operation of all lights. Make sure your vehicle emissions and inspection sticker are up to date.

Check the oil level in the generator. Service the generator according to specified intervals found in the owner’s manual. Inspect the generator exhaust system for any damage prior to starting. Never run a generator with a damaged exhaust system.

If you didn’t exercise the generator during storage, start and run it for about two hours with at least a half-rated load. Check your generator owner’s manual for load ratings. If you didn’t use a fuel stabilizer and the generator won’t start or continues to surge after starting, have it checked out and repaired by an authorized service facility.

Inspect seams and seals

Inspect all roof and body seams and around any openings for signs of cracking or damage and reseal if necessary. Consult your RV owner’s manual or ask us about sealants compatible with different types of materials. If you don’t feel comfortable performing the inspections or repairing seams and sealants, we can do it for you.

Perform a safety check

Test the operation of the smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector, and LP gas leak detector. Inspect all fire extinguishers to make sure they are fully charged. Make sure that you and your family members know how to use a fire extinguisher. Everyone should know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning and what to do if you are exposed to it.

Conclusion

This is a very basic checklist to jump-start your spring RV maintenance, but for more detailed information check out this e-book written by Mark Polk for RV Education 101, RV Checklists – The Original Checklists for RVers.

This book includes all the checklists you will ever need for your RV!

Summer is the perfect time of year to get the family together and pile up the RV for an adventurous road trip. If your travel trailer wasn’t sufficiently de-winterized in the spring, however, it may not be as ready to hit the road as you are. This can lead to unwanted mechanical issues and insulation problems — which you definitely don’t want in the middle of a heat wave!

Fortunately, you can prepare your RV for any vacation, long or short, by following the preparation guidelines in this article. For more information on seasonal RV maintenance, repairs, and parts, please visit East Coast Campers online and schedule an appointment today!

Complete Summer Prep Checklist For Your Travel Trailer or RV

RV Batteries

Water Tanks & Plumbing Fixtures

RV Appliances

Tire Pressure

Engine and Fluid Levels

Insulation

Safety Measures

RV Batteries: Check and Charge

If you don’t know much about the maintenance services that go into your travel trailer’s upkeep, RV battery inspection is an essential but relatively easy place to begin if you have the right equipment. Even if you didn’t use your travel trailer much during the previous year, you’ll need to get this task done, as RV battery energy dwindles at a rate of 10% when not in use.

To check your battery capacity, you’ll need to be familiar with the kind of battery your travel trailer has. For instance, your model may have two 12-volt batteries or a series of 6-volt batteries arranged in parallel rows. You’ll also need to have a multimeter on hand. This device measures voltages in both AC and DC, and although some more advanced designs can give you additional features, you’ll be perfectly equipped to check battery capacity with a unit in the $20-30 range. Follow manufacturer guidelines for operation and reference your RV owner’s handbook for details on how to interpret the multimeter results.

If you don’t have a multimeter on hand and don’t want to go through the hassle of ordering or purchasing one, let the pros at East Coast Campers do it for you. Our Service & Parts specialists can even come to your Delaware campsite if you encounter problems on your next summer road trip!

Water Tanks & Plumbing Fixtures: Look For Leaks

Prior to the start of last spring, you likely dewinterized your RV or travel trailer. But if you forgot to do this or think your pipes could benefit from some additional TLC, it’s never a bad idea to perform an assessment of your plumbing fixtures. This process can be time-consuming and technical for the average owner, but it’s a fantastic investment that will save you dividends on repairs and parts in the future.

The best place to start is with your water tank. If you used antifreeze last spring or winter, flush the unit with purified or potable water. Drain and repeat the process until water runs clear. After this, check for leaks. Look around all water-carrying appliances and fixtures, like the kitchen sink, shower, and toilet. If you notice the slightest dribble or drop, you’ll want to get that fixed right away. As for the other plumbing fixtures in your travel trailer, these will vary from model to model and any glaring leaks or structural issues will likely require a parts replacement.

Whether it’s a water tank repair or a plumbing replacement, you have the best likelihood of eliminating the issue when you get the job done by a professional mechanic. You can find affordable and convenient services this summer from our team in Frankford!

RV Appliances: Propane & Electric Evaluation

Nearly all travel trailer models use some form of propane or electrical system to provide energy to their appliances. From the stovetop to the lamp in your bunkhouse bedroom, maintaining the proper flow of energy to RV appliances is critical. The procedures that go into an RV appliance assessment include tests for leaks, gas pressure readouts, and comparisons of your trailer’s performance with manufacturer and industry standards.

Your summer maintenance checks will be different depending on the kind of travel trailer you have, how long you’ve had it, and the listed expiration dates on your propane tanks. To take care of all these tasks, it’s best to do so in a spacious area like a campground or RV park. If you have any issues with your appliances, be sure to contact East Coast Campers for professional advice and local service solutions.

RV Tires: Air Pressure & Alignment

The variety of tire manufacturers is vast and variable, especially those that are produced for large RVs, campers, and travel trailers! Warranty guarantees are subject to range from 5 to 10 years, but regardless of what your tire company claims, annual maintenance (at the very least) is a must-have for your RV’s wellbeing.

You’ll check your RV tire quality with an air pressure reading, since vehicles in storage lose pressure when not in operation. Your owner’s manual should instruct you on the proper PSI. Once this is done, give your tires a thorough look-over for wear and tear, cracks, and signs of damage. Proper tire maintenance can prevent your RV from experiencing an unwanted and inconvenient blow out, so make sure these checks are taken care of before you leave for your summer vacation.

Engine and Fluid Levels: Restock and Restore

The engine in your travel trailer — or any vehicle, for that matter — can only function at its best when all associated fluids are stocked in the right amounts and with the right products. The fluids you’ll likely need to check, replenish, and/or replace include engine coolant, oil, windshield washer, brake fluid, and several others. The amounts of restocking you need to do will be indicated by the gauges in your travel trailer. Unless you understand the functions and intricacies of these engine fluids, you’ll save the most time and money by having an RV repair expert perform a quick diagnostic.

Insulation

Even if you think your travel trailer’s HVAC system is performing the way it should, that doesn’t necessarily mean your RV was manufactured with energy-efficiency and optimal insulation in mind. When you’re getting ready to hit the road, whether it’s for a cross-country adventure or a camping getaway in a neighboring state, the last thing you want to deal with is an RV interior that’s too hot. Not only is a hot interior space uncomfortable, but it can lead to more serious issues like overheated parts — and overheating of your travel trailer’s occupants!

You can assess the quality of your RV insulation by taking a look at its seams and seals. Any cracks, gaps, or peeling parts are a strong sign that you’re losing cool air and energy efficiency, which will cost you money and physical comfort year-round. To find out which RV sealant is right for thermal control of your travel trailer, consult a parts and service representative at our Delaware repair center.

Safety Measures: Be Prepared For All Situations

The remainder of your summer preparation for your travel trailer will involve assessing any safety devices or precautionary measures in your vehicle. Just like any home, your RV needs to have a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisher, and propane leak detectors. If you’re missing one or more of these, or if one is out of battery, it’s the perfect time to schedule a maintenance session with one of our seasoned professionals at East Coast Campers & More.

Is Your Travel Trailer Ready For Summer?

If you’ve completed all 7 items on this summer prep checklist, then your travel trailer may be ready to go for your next adventure! But skipping just one or two of these essential maintenance processes is a risky decision that almost always leads to transportation issues and avoidable repairs or parts replacements. Regular servicing of your travel trailer (or any RV you own) is the best way to ensure you keep your ride in good condition and prevent hassle that could easily have been avoided.

To make sure your summer vacation goes off without a hitch, get in touch with East Coast Campers & More in Frankford. Whether it’s a simple tire pressure adjustment or a full-scale insulation replacement, we have the skill and industry expertise to get the job done better than any other RV company in Delaware. Have a safe and memorable summer by taking advantage of our travel trailer services today!

Prevent Water Damage With These RV Maintenance Tips

Preventative RV maintenance should be a regular part of your RV adventures.

Costly repairs can ruin your trip and keep you from truly enjoying your RV.

Doing a few checks and inspections may seem tedious, but over time, you will save money and time catching problems before they happen.

Each RV will have different requirements.

It is best to check the manufacturer’s warranty and recommendations to make sure you take the proper steps and use the recommended products such as lubricants.

Of course, East Coast Campers and More is always here to help. Our maintenance department is ready to step in and help out so you don’t have to stress about what to do.

RV Roof Leaks

A roof inspection should be on your RV maintenance checklist.

Roof leaks can cause considerable damage to your RV that you may not notice right away.

The damage can be quite severe and expensive to repair.

Experts like East Coast Campers and More recommend that you perform a roof inspection once or twice per year.

Climb up onto the roof of your RV and inspect all the spots where holes have been drilled through the roof.

Taking a proactive approach to inspecting for cracks can stop future leaks in their tracks.

Look for items such as:

TV and radio antenna

Roof vents

Solar panel mounting brackets

Skylights

Inspect the adhesive surrounding the item for small cracks.

You will need a paper towel, mineral spirits, and Dicor (or the waterproof adhesive that is recommended by the manufacturer – check with East Coast Campers and More to make sure you are using the correct waterproof adhesive).

Once you’ve identified cracks that need repair, dampen your paper towel with mineral spirits and rub the crack in the adhesive until there is no dirt remaining.

Apply the Dicor or chosen waterproof adhesive to the area.

Here is a video tutorial by RV Geeks on how to do minor preventative repairs.

Slideout Maintenance

Maintaining the slideout seals will prevent leaks from causing water damage so this task should be added to your RV maintenance checklist.

Make it a regular practice to periodically do some maintenance on the seals to prevent them from cracking and sticking.

While keeping the slideouts in, add a bit of baby powder to a sock and run it along the seal as far as you can safely reach. The powder will prevent the slideouts from sticking and causing cracks and rips.

Once you finish with the inside, open up the slideouts and do the same thing on the outside seals, reaching around the slideout as far as you can.

This video by RV geeks will provide a step by step tutorial on how to do slideout maintenance.

Window Maintenance

RV travel means you are exposed to the elements, and often dirt and debris can collect inside the track of your windows.

Doing regular maintenance can prevent repairs from interrupting your trip.

First, vacuum or clean out the track of your windows.

Take an appropriate lubricant (refer to East Coast Campers and More for recommendations) and spray inside the track.

Make sure you get all the nooks and crannies.

Slide your window back and forth to make sure the lubricant spreads throughout the entire track.

This video tutorial by RV education 101 shows you exactly how to perform window track maintenance.

RV Maintenance Summary

Keep a regular RV maintenance schedule and you should be able to avoid unnecessary repairs.

An RV is your home away from home so treat it with the same level of care.

5 Best RV Maintenance Tips You Need to Know

Doing regular RV maintenance is crucial to the longevity of your trailer. A well-kept RV can be the difference between years of fun, happy, and healthy family trips, and frustrating, stressful vacations riddled with problems.

Here are some basic tips on how to do regular RV maintenance.

1. Cleaning

The exterior finish of your RV can be damaged if you don’t do regular cleaning after every trip. It’s best to make cleaning part of your RV maintenance routine as soon as you buy your first RV or trailer.

If you camp near water, the salt can cause corrosion over time and leaving dust and dirt on your RV can cause damage to any exterior, just as it can with any other type of vehicle.

Try to avoid using a power washer. Lightly scrubbing the RV with a soft brush and some mild detergent is sufficient for the exterior finish.

To prevent damage to the undercarriage of your rig, make sure you hose it down once in a while to remove any dirt or grime buildup.

2. Lights and Brakes

Every good RV maintenance routine includes testing the lights and brakes after each trip.

Checking the brakes and lights is even more important when you are towing a trailer or 5th wheel, as the connections can be damaged over time and cause faulty wiring.

Check the connections and wiring for proper insulation and if any wires are visible or loose. Electrical tape can be used to secure any loose wires.

3. Battery

The battery is the heart of your trailer. Proper maintenance of a battery can extend it’s life significantly and prevent unnecessary trip interruptions.

Your RV battery should be maintained fairly regularly.

The Charge

Most batteries come with a system to prevent them from overcharging, but you will want to be sure your level of charge does not drop too low.

Sulfation begins if you let your battery charge drop below 80%. Never let your battery drop below 50% charge.

Read more about batteries and how to make them part of your RV maintenance routine in this article.

4. Tires

Take a look down the treads of your tires and check for imperfections in the tread, nails, screws, or any other object that can puncture a tire.

RVs tires are more prone to cracks than regular car tires because they sit idle for a longer.

Cracks in your tires are a major safety concern as they can cause dangerous blowouts when traveling from site to site.

Every trip should include at least one visual tire inspection, making sure to check for issues such as dry rot.

Tire pressure can also be a safety concert, so be sure to check that your pressure is at the recommended PSI before every trip.

Visually inspect shackles and springs for cracks and wear.

When storing your RV for the winter, treat your tires with vinyl treatment that has UV protection. The sun can be very damaging to your tires.

No tire RV maintenance plan is complete without tightening the lugs. Lug tightening should always be in a star pattern and before every trip.

To find out more about how often each aspect of RV maintenance should be conducted, bookmark this chart.

5. Holding Tanks

It’s important to do maintenance on your three holding tanks after each trip and to inspect them before each trip.

For all three tanks, remember to inspect all hoses and fittings and replace if damaged before every trip.

Inspect the tanks themselves for damage before each trip.

Fresh Water Tank

Fresh water tank should be kept cleaned, flushed and sanitized regularly, preferably after each excursion and more often if you are camping for a long time.

Algae can grow and make you and your family sick if the water tank is not drained and sanitized regularly.

Gray Water Tank

The gray water tank should be emptied around once a week while camping and after every trip.

Black Water Tank

It’s very important to clean out your black water tank after each trip. It can become incredibly unpleasant very quickly if you don’t keep it clean.

There is nothing more frustrating than finding out your RV
battery has died on you. It throws a
wrench in the plan, or even worse, having your battery burn up on you because
it wasn’t maintained.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to extend the
life of your battery and take good care of it, so it doesn’t become a safety
hazard.

Making RV battery maintenance part of your regular routine
will prevent irritating disruptions in your vacation plans and keep your family
safe.

There are several different types of batteries, so we will focus on the most common battery type, a lead-acid battery. Please refer to the maintenance department of East Coast Campers and more to get customized recommendations for your specific RV type.

RV Battery Voltage and Why it Matters

With a lead acid battery, you want to make sure you keep the
charge high.

Monitor the charge in your battery and never let it get
below the voltage label of the battery.
For instance, you don’t want a 12-volt battery to go below a 12-volt
charge.

What Happens When Your Battery Charge Gets Low?

When your RV battery starts to lose its charge, it starts forming
crystals called sulfation. Sulfation
starts to form when your battery falls below 80% charge and will kill your
battery.

The good news is, you can take a few simple steps to prevent
battery sulfation and keep your RV battery humming along for as long as
possible.

Keep your Battery Charged

The lower you let the charge drop, the quicker your battery
will die. A battery that drops to 40%
charge every day will die much quicker than one that drops to 60% every day.

The average 12-volt lead acid battery will last
approximately six years.

Make a routine out of checking the charge of your battery
with a handheld digital voltage meter.
This will go a long way in keeping your battery alive for as long as
possible.

If you have a battery disconnect switch, flip it to
disconnect while you aren’t using your RV or when it’s stored during the off
season. This will prevent the slow drain
caused by things like clocks and radios.

The Heat of Summer and Your RV Battery

Monitor your battery in times of high usage or extreme
heat.

Top up water levels using distilled, mineral free
water. If you use tap water, you run the
risk of getting calcium sulfation on your battery.

Be Safe When Checking Your RV Battery

Make sure you always wear gloves when you are handling your
battery. You will want to get a pair of
safety goggles to keep around and never smoke or have an open flame near your
battery.

An RV battery stores a lot of energy, and in some circumstances can cause fires. Battery maintenance should not be taken lightly.

Regular Maintenance Is Key

Whether you learn how to do this yourself, or you come in to
see our maintenance department at East Coast Campers and more, it is essential
to your safety that you come up with a regular battery maintenance routine for
your RV.

Call us today to see how we can help.
